Compeer of Monongalia County

Compeer Mission:

To address the isolation and loneliness experienced by adults who have mental health concerns in the Monongalia County area, using volunteers in supportive friendships to reduce the stigma of mental illness in the community at large through education.

Compeer History

Compeer Inc. started in Rochester, NY in 1973.  Since then it has grown to over 80 affiliate programs across 33 states, Canada, Austraila, and The Netherlands.

Compeer of Monongalia County began in 1992.  It originated at what is now known as Mental Health America (MHA) in Morgantown, and is currently housed at the Northern West Virginia Center for Independent Living (NWVCIL).

A Message from the Program Coordinator

"Compeer is a unique and exciting program that really makes a difference in people's lives.  For a lot of people, a meaningful friendship is just as important as any treatment, medicine, or therapy."
